Yield 6 roses

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed
  • 2 red apples (e.g. Red Delicious)
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon flour, for dusting the counter
  • 3 tablespoons apricot preserve
  • Cinnamon (optional)
  • Powdered sugar, for decorating (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1
Thaw the puff pastry if you haven't already; it takes about 20-30 minutes.
  2. 2
Thinly slice the apples, place in a bowl with the lemon juice and a little water, and microwave about 3 minutes to soften slightly (or simmer the slices in a small pan on the stove).
  3. 3
In a bowl, combine 3 tablespoons apricot preserve with 2 tablespoons water and microwave about 1 minute so it spreads easily.
  4. 4
Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut into strips. Spread the preserve over the dough.
  5. 5
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Drain the apples.
  6. 6
Arrange overlapping apple slices along the top half of each dough strip. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired.
  7. 7
Fold the bottom half of the dough up over the apples.
  8. 8
Carefully roll up each strip, seal the edge, and place in a silicone muffin cup (grease the cups if not using silicone).
  9. 9
Repeat for all 6 roses. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for about 40-45 minutes, until fully cooked through. If the apples look done after 30 minutes, move the pan to a lower rack and bake 10-15 minutes more so the pastry cooks through.
  10. 10
Dust with powdered sugar and serve.
