Depression-Era Wacky Chocolate Cake

A legendary, magically moist chocolate cake created out of historical necessity that uses absolutely no eggs, butter , milk, or mixing bowls. Pure kitchen chemistry!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated white sugar
  • 3 tbsp Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp White vinegar
  • 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract
  • 5 tbsp Vegetable oil or canola oil
  • 1 cup Cold water

    Preheat your kitchen oven to 350°F (175°C).

    Do not grease or spray an 8x8 inch square baking pan.

    Dump the flour , sugar , cocoa powder , baking soda, and salt directly into the dry baking pan.

    Whisk them together inside the pan until fully blended.

    Use a spoon to create three separate indentations (wells/divots) in the dry powder mix.

    Pour the white vinegar into the first well, vanilla extract into the second, and vegetable oil into the third.

    Pour the cold water across the entire surface of the pan over all ingredients.

    Grab a standard kitchen fork and mix everything together thoroughly right inside the pan until a smooth liquid cake batter forms.
